Romans 3

1 What advantage then hath the Jew? or what profit is there of circumcision? 2 Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God. 3 For what if some did not believe ? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect ? 4 God forbid : yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written , That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged . 5 But if our unrighteousness commend the righteousness of God, what shall we say ? Is God unrighteous who taketh vengeance? (I speak as a man) 6 God forbid : for then how shall God judge the world? 7 For if the truth of God hath more abounded through my lie unto his glory; why yet am I also judged as a sinner? 8 And not rather, (as we be slanderously reported , and as some affirm that we say ,) Let us do evil, that good may come ? whose damnation is just. 9 What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin; 10 As it is written , There is none righteous, no, not one: 11 There is none that understandeth , there is none that seeketh after God. 12 They are all gone out of the way , they are together become unprofitable ; there is none that doeth good, no, not one . 13 Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit ; the poison of asps is under their lips: 14 Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: 15 Their feet are swift to shed blood: 16 Destruction and misery are in their ways: 17 And the way of peace have they not known : 18 There is no fear of God before their eyes. 19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith , it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped , and all the world may become guilty before God. 20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. 21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested , being witnessed by the law and the prophets; 22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe : for there is no difference: 23 For all have sinned , and come short of the glory of God; 24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past , through the forbearance of God; 26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. 27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded . By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith. 28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. 29 Is he the God of the Jews only? is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also: 30 Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith. 31 Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid : yea, we establish the law.

One thought on “Romans 3

  1. Commentary below:

    1 What advantage then hath the Jew? or what profit is there of circumcision?
    ~Paul continues on the subject of the benefits of being a Jew verses a Gentile. In the end neither is important. What is important is the shed blood of Jesus Christ.

    2 Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God.
    ~The Jews were given the Word of God in the form of the Old Testament, however just owning the Word of God does not save the, Just going to the Temple does not save them, Knowing that the Christ will come does not save them…..

    3 For what if some did not believe ? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect ?
    ~Because we choose to not believe God does that make him not real? Read back on Romans 2 commentary if we don’t believe in gravity does it make it not real also?

    4 God forbid : yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written , That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged .
    ~ We are justified through Christ, we can say we dont believe we can live like we dont care but in the end the only way to heaven according to the Scripture is through the shed blood of Christ on the cross.

    5 But if our unrighteousness commend the righteousness of God, what shall we say ? Is God unrighteous who taketh vengeance? (I speak as a man)
    ~ When it comes to unrighteousness, we need to not think as a simple man. The easy definition of righteousness is simply stated to be right with God. How can god be not right with himself, it is impossible! God can not go against what God is.

    6 God forbid : for then how shall God judge the world?
    ~ If God broke his commandments then there is no way that God could judge the world. God is perfect in every way. We may not agree with what he allows or understand his ways but in the end the book of Psalms says we cant understand them His ways are not our ways, His thoughts are not our thoughts, His is much higher!

    7 For if the truth of God hath more abounded through my lie unto his glory; why yet am I also judged as a sinner?
    ~ The focus of this chapter is summed up in the next couple verses. Pay close attention to what Paul is saying to verse 9.

    8 And not rather, (as we be slanderously reported , and as some affirm that we say ,) Let us do evil, that good may come ? whose damnation is just. 9 What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;
    ~ Many folks and Christians fall into this category today. They believe they do no wrong and their sins are minor in comparison to others around them, most of us have not raped anyone, or killed anyone at least I am better than those who have done those atrocities.

    10 As it is written , There is none righteous, no, not one:
    ~Paul sums it up here for us about what God thinks about things. We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Each of us has. The sin does not matter the severity in the end its all sin. Break one of the commandments Jesus said you broke them all. Because I am a Jew or a Gentile saves me not, it once again is the blood atonement for my sin.

    11 There is none that understandeth , there is none that seeketh after God.
    ~ We think because we read the Bible and pray that we are seeking God. Remember there is NONE that understands God and there is none that decided to seek God; God seeks us and he proved that from the day he made Adam to the day he chose to die on the cross for our sin, to the day he chose to raise from the grave to prove he had dominion over sin. To the day you ask or asked him to save you from your sins!

    12 They are all gone out of the way , they are together become unprofitable ; there is none that doeth good, no, not one .
    ~ We all have gone away from the path, we have all sinned, when we sin we become unprofitable. Our sin is what causes us to fall short of Gods glory.

    13 Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit ; the poison of asps is under their lips:
    ~ Our tongues are what gets us going we say a lie, untruths come out of our mouths continually. Sometimes its in the form of little white lies as we like to call them to full blown denials of the sins we have committed.

    14 Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:
    ~ Cursing seems like its a sport in today’s world you cant hardly watch a “kids movie” without hearing something that does not NEED to be in the movie, why because our sinful flesh enjoys it. Bitterness is in each of us. No matter how we try to be positive there is always negative in there too, it may be towards a friend, family member, co worker or complete stranger, bitterness is in-rooted in our very being.

    15 Their feet are swift to shed blood:
    ~ Our will of the flesh is to harm others, weather talking bad of them or out to kill them we are swift to run to the sin that so easily besets us.

    16 Destruction and misery are in their ways:
    ~ Sin brings misery and destruction. It has since the beginning in the garden.

    17 And the way of peace have they not known :
    ~ When you are living in sin, the way of peace is not in you, the only real peace as the song says “Dear Lord is in you”. We search for peace in all sorts of things as a people some will search in knowledge, some will in a bottle, some in a needle or a pill, but I know that he only real peace we can ever have is in Christ Jesus.

    18 There is no fear of God before their eyes.
    ~ People who are living in sin shows that they have no fear of God and his judgement. That lack of fear does not turn into lack of judgement. It only shows lack of logic!

    19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith , it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped , and all the world may become guilty before God.
    ~ The law was given to us to be a school master, to teach us that there is none of us that is perfect, that we have all sinned. When we measure ourselves up to the law we will never measure up.

    20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
    ~ If we are judged by the law only there is no flesh that will be justified, there is nobody in other-words that would be not found guilty of sin if we measure each of us up to the law.

    21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested , being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
    ~ The only righteousness we have now or will ever have is not found in the law but in the shed blood of Jesus Christ and him crucified. Our acceptance of his gift of salvation is the only work we have in the justification of ourselves.

    22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe : for there is no difference:
    ~ The righteousness of man is in Christ and him only. It is to ALL men who believe on him. Christ does not forgive sin of only the Jew but also the Gentile.

    23 For all have sinned , and come short of the glory of God;
    ~ We have all sinned and fallen short of Gods glory, when we sin we are separated from Christ, from God the Father. There is no sin in him and he can not allow sin.

    24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
    ~ We are only justified by the redemption from our sin which is in Christ!

    25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past , through the forbearance of God;
    ~ A propitiation for our sin means a payment for our sin. We are only justified by the payment of our sins by Christ on the cross.

    26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
    ~ Our belief through our faith is how we are justified and become righteous. It is only through Christ that we are justified, not of our works, nothing we do it is of God through Christ ONLY!!!

    27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded . By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.
    ~ When we boast it is excused, its not excused by the law or our works (deeds) but by our faith.

    28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.
    ~ This is a hard hearing right here for many Christians and non Christians, Jews or Gentiles, we are not justified by our deeds or the law, it is through Christ only and him crucified.

    29 Is he the God of the Jews only? is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also:
    ~ Paul asks if he is the God of the Jews only…….what about the Gentiles he asks. There is but one God and he is often mimicked but never duplicated.

    30 Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.
    ~ We are not justified by any circumcision or not being circumcised we are ONLY justified by Christ and our faith in Him!

    31 Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid : yea, we establish the law.
    ~ Our faith does not destroy the law. The law shows us that we are in need of a savior. Look none of us can do this on our own and make it to the end of our lives without sinning. It is impossible, that is why Christ died on the cross. If there was another way don’t you think God would have done it, it was the ONLY way. If you have not made the decision to follow Christ yet, make that decision today!
