1 Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest : for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things. 2 But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things. 3 And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God? 4 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance? 5 But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; 6 Who will render to every man according to his deeds: 7 To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: 8 But unto them that are contentious , and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, 9 Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile; 10 But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile: 11 For there is no respect of persons with God. 12 For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law; 13 (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified . 14 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: 15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness , and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another 😉 16 In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel. 17 Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the law, and makest thy boast of God, 18 And knowest his will, and approvest the things that are more excellent , being instructed out of the law; 19 And art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness, 20 An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, which hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law. 21 Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal , dost thou steal ? 22 Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery , dost thou commit adultery ? thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege ? 23 Thou that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking the law dishonourest thou God? 24 For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written . 25 For circumcision verily profiteth , if thou keep the law: but if thou be a breaker of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision. 26 Therefore if the uncircumcision keep the righteousness of the law, shall not his uncircumcision be counted for circumcision? 27 And shall not uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfil the law, judge thee, who by the letter and circumcision dost transgress the law? 28 For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly ; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: 29 But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly ; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.

  1. Today we will follow suit with yesterdays commentary, We will go verse by verse looking at each one with the whole in mind.

    1 Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest : for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.
    ~ The readers of this chapter (written to the Romans) are called inexcusable (without excuse) when we judge others. When we judge others we then force judgement upon ourselves. We force judgement upon ourselves because we are guilty of the same sin that others are guilty of. We may not do the exact same act as the other but we all sin, each and everyone of us. We are not above sin and we often seem to run to sin.

    2 But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things.
    ~ Verse two tells us that God will judge us according to truth, for those who have committed sin. We have all sinned by the way so that means God will judge you and I both.

    3 And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?
    ~Paul wants you (and I ) to remember this when we start judging others, and do the same thing, he asks a question if we can escape the judgement of God? Let me help you with this one, you cant hide from God, you cant go anywhere where God is not, you are not above God so you are within his judgement when your time comes.

    4 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?
    ~ Do you despise the things of God, his riches (what he has given to you), his goodness, his forbearance (the fact that he has not pronounced judgement on you already), long suffering, (similar to forbearance), it is the goodness of God that leads to repentance. You can see this by the fact that many will come to God simply on the promise of heaven let alone the other things that God offers for being his child.

    5 But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;
    ~But we will harden our hearts and treasure the things of wrath of God

    6 Who will render to every man according to his deeds:
    ~God will judge everyone, we all will be judged there is none that will escape it, I like to give the illustration for those who say I don’t believe in God; that I don’t have to believe in gravity either but if I go jumping off a cliff I will fall to my death just the same.

    7 To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:
    ~Geneva study notes is quoted as “(d) Glory which follows good works, which he does not lay out before us as though there were any that could attain to salvation by his own strength, but, he lays this condition of salvation before us, which no man can perform, to bring men to Christ, who alone justifies the believers, as he himself concludes; see ( Romans 2:21-22 )”. for this verse.

    8 But unto them that are contentious , and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,
    ~ For those of us that are able to understand and don’t obey the truth (God’s word), instead choose the things that are not right by God’s word they will have indignation (anger or annoyance provoked by what is perceived as unfair treatment) and wrath (extreme anger). Do you know someone who is fully in a sinful life, many of them are so bitter that they are very difficult to deal with at all.

    9 Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;
    ~ Trouble and anguish is for every person that does evil, this is reserved for both Jew and Gentile.

    10 But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:
    ~ Those who choose the path of God’s righteousness (to be right with God), God says there will be glory, honor and peace. This too is reserved for both the Jew and the Gentile. Just a little note if you are not a Jew then you are a Gentile.

    11 For there is no respect of persons with God.
    ~God has no respect for person. Lets just get this out of the way. There is nothing you can say, be, do, no matter how much money, resources, gold, silver, land, possession there is nothing that will give you the respect of God. The only thing that God respects is the believer that is covered in the blood of Christ.

    12 For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;
    ~If you have sinned without the law you will perish, if you are sinning in the law (being a Jew) you will be judged by the law and then will receive the judgement you deserve.

    13 (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified .
    ~Its not those who hear the law that are justified but the doers of the law. You cant say you are and not do it. In other words for those Christians reading this you cant say your a Christian then live like the devil, but you actually need to live out the Christian life (outlined in the Bible).

    14 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:
    ~ For the Gentile (someone who is not a Jew), we are not under the law we then doing the things of the law find that the law is by nature given to us. We should know that it is not good to lie, steal, kill exc.

    15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness , and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another ; )
    ~ We live our lives as Gentiles as if we are living under the law, we became as if we are under the law because our hearts know to live the way we should.

    16 In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.
    ~ When we are judged we are judged by the very secrets of our heart, we are not just judged by the things we say we believe but when nobody is around and we show the integrity that we actually have weather good or bad. That is where the judgement of God will be upon us.

    17 Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the law, and makest thy boast of God,
    ~ If you are a Jew and resist the things of God, then boast about what you are in God, what do you think you will actually be judged on? It wont be what you say; just so you know!

    18 And knowest his will, and approvest the things that are more excellent , being instructed out of the law;
    ~ Goes on to say you know what God’s will is and approve the things that are excellent according to God because you have been instructed of the law, its not the law that saves the Jew. Its not the adherence to the law but its the fulfilling of the law by the sacrifice that was made for the Jew. They do not accept him but that sacrifice was Christ.

    19 And art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness,
    ~The Jew believes they are a guide for the blind of this world and that you are a light in the darkness of this world. Really this part can apply to the Jew or the Gentile.

    20 An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, which hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law.
    ~ He starts wrapping it up by saying a teacher to the fools, a teacher to babes (they just dont know better yet), has a form of knowledge and of truth in the law.

    21 Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal , dost thou steal ?
    ~ You teach others yet you have not taught yourself. If you teach that you should not steal, do you yourself steal?

    22 Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery , dost thou commit adultery ? thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege ?
    ~ Do you teach that you should not commit adultery yet you commit it, do you teach to avoid idols in your life yet you have them in your life?

    23 Thou that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking the law dishonourest thou God?
    ~ Do you tell others not to break the laws of God yet you yourself break them?

    24 For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written .
    ~ You are the witness that others will see when you are breaking the laws of God this really goes to the Jew or the Gentile. You are the example for Christ and I can absolutely guarantee you that if you found doing things that are against the Word of God you will have someone there to notice. You will eventually get caught and then your testimony will be forever tarnished.

    25 For circumcision verily profiteth , if thou keep the law: but if thou be a breaker of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision.
    ~ For the Jew circumcision is there to show that you are a Jew but when you become a breaker of the law that circumcision means nothing.

    26 Therefore if the uncircumcision keep the righteousness of the law, shall not his uncircumcision be counted for circumcision?
    ~ If you are not circumcised and keep the law, the outward appearance means nothing you would be counted for circumcision.

    27 And shall not uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfil the law, judge thee, who by the letter and circumcision dost transgress the law?
    ~ Circumcision matters not it will be the righteous that will judge, it matters not what we wear either with our bodies or on our bodies, God does not have respect for what we say or do, he has respect for the blood of Christ and the only part we have in that is our accepting his gift of forgiveness.

    28 For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly ; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh:
    ~ See note from above verse, fits here too!

    29 But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly ; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.
    ~ We as believers of God, we need to walk in a way that is pleasing to God, he gives us the Bible as our instruction manual and we are to follow it as closely as we possibly can. We should not only follow it by saying but doing. It is not the saying or what we say that matters to God but its the daily walk we have with God that matters.
