Romans

1 I say then , Hath God cast away his people? God forbid . For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. 2 God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew . God forbid : but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy . 12 Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their fulness? 13 For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office: 14 If by any means I may provoke to emulation them which are my flesh, and might save some of them. 15 For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead? 16 For if the firstfruit be holy, the lump is also holy: and if the root be holy, so are the branches. 17 And if some of the branches be broken off , and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree; 18 Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast , thou bearest not the root, but the root thee. 19 Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off , that I might be graffed in . 20 Well; because of unbelief they were broken off , and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded , but fear : 21 For if God spared not the natural branches , take heed lest he also spare not thee. 22 Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell , severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off . 23 And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be graffed in : for God is able to graff them in again. 24 For if thou wert cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and wert graffed contrary to nature into a good olive tree: how much more shall these, which be the natural branches, be graffed into their own olive tree? 25 For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in . 26 And so all Israel shall be saved : as it is written , There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer , and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob: 27 For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins. 28 As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes : but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers’ sakes. 29 For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance. 30 For as ye in times past have not believed God, yet have now obtained mercy through their unbelief: 31 Even so have these also now not believed , that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy . 32 For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all. 33 O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! 34 For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? 35 Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again ? 36 For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. 1. Commentary:

1 I say then , Hath God cast away his people? God forbid . For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.
~ Paul picks up where he left off in Chapter 10 and speaks about the fact that the Israelites are not abandoned by God. I find this interesting really. If you really think about who it was physically that was calling for Christ to be crucified on the cross it was the Jews who required his blood for what they claimed was blaspheme. The same nation that Christ came to and taught God’s word to was the one that in the end crucified him. Yes they did this via the Roman empire who was in charge of the region at that time but the people responsible were his chosen people. They even said his blood is on our hands. If you are a Christian here today reading this, and you don’t know already the one who truly crucified Christ was every leaving man, women and child on this planet that has ever and will ever live. It was for our sinful nature that he HAD to go to the cross. I simply find it interesting that he chose his chosen people to be the ones who took him there that day. Paul goes on to say; he too was an Israelite and he has not been cast away. He still has a way to make it to heaven. He still is in God’s plan. Let me tell you if Paul can make it into God’s plan for salvation, any of us can. Paul who was a persecutor of the Christian faith. He even killed one of Christ’s own chose students. Yet Paul if you read the new testament was a MIGHTY man of God. You have done nothing in your life that makes it so God can not use you. Even if you have some major thing that you have messed up in your life. God Can Use YOU!

2 God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew . Wot ye not what the scripture saith of Elias? how he maketh intercession to God against Israel, saying ,
~ Paul goes on to assure the Jews that God has not cast them off. If you remember Christ came to speak to his nation. He sent the apostles out 2 by 2 to the nation of Israel. Yes he spoke to others along the way but lets be frank. Israel is God’s chosen. There is no replacement verses in this book that can replace that. Christians are not given the same promises that the Jews of old were. They continue to be his chosen ones. We as Christians however have a different promise, that is the promise of being his bride. I don’t know about you but when I look at my wife I have great pride in her. She is a woman that I will forever love. She is my chosen as we are God’s chosen; to be his bride.

3 Lord, they have killed thy prophets, and digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life.
~ I ask you who did this? When it was not God’s chosen why was it? The who is kinda answered in the second part to the question. The who typically was God’s chosen when they refused to listen to God’s word, God’s rule. They would tear down the alters and go after other gods. When they did this long enough God would send them to bondage under another enemy. It happened time and time again in the old testament. It was always done in disobedience.

4 But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal.
~ God reminds Paul there are a number who has not bowed down to other gods. We don’t today bow down to Baal, instead we bow down to money, to riches, fame, power, and typically to ourselves. We follow science and man rather than God’s word. We choose to listen to fairy tales about what we should do rather than living a life like Christ did while he was on this earth. I don’t presume to infer you will live a perfect life, but when I read my Bible it encourages me to try to.

5 Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.
~ A remnant, a small group. That still believes that the Grace of God is sufficient for our salvation. Remember its not what we do that gets us to heaven but what Christ did on the cross. We do not seek him first, he seeks us. The picture of Christ standing knocking on the door where there is no door handle; that represents Christ knocking on your hearts door. He will not open it for you but you must open for him. The gift of salvation is free, its given to you if you allow it. But its not because you have lived a life above others. Its not because you were born to a certain family, attend a certain church, or live a certain life. You obtain salvation via the shed blood of Christ that he gave freely on the cross for your sins and mine.

6 And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.
~ Paul goes on to teach about works verses grace. There are many in that date (and still today) who believe that they will get to heaven based on the life they lead. Based on what they do or have done in this life. Friends if you are relying on what you did to get to heaven then there is no reason for Christ to die on the cross. We have not part of that work and if you are trusting in yourself and your deeds you have not part in the place called heaven. You have decided you want to trust in what you have done to save you, friend that is just no right! its what Christ did that saves you.

7 What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for ; but the election hath obtained it , and the rest were blinded
~ Israel will not get the grace of God in salvation by relying on something they have done, not by being God’s chosen only. Instead they will gain it by their faith in Christ, and his finished work on the cross just like every other believer.

8 (According as it is written , God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see , and ears that they should not hear 😉 unto this day.
~ God has many times made it so when you deny him, you will never understand fully how to obtain him. Look at Pharaoh. Before Moses came back to speak to him in order to let his people go; he visited Pharaohs heart and hardened it. He is able to work that way back in Genesis with Pharaoh, with many of those in the Bible and event today friend. Harden not your heart but trust in the Lord.

9 And David saith , Let their table be made a snare , and a trap , and a stumblingblock , and a recompence unto them: 10 Let their eyes be darkened , that they may not see , and bow down their back alway.
~ God warns us that if we do not accept him before the time the Church is called out that we will see this happen in a large way during the end times. If you have not accepted Christ as your personal savior prior to the Church leaving this ol’ sin filled world; it will be to late. Don’t play games with your eternity, Come to Christ today!

11 I say then , Have they stumbled that they should fall ? God forbid : but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy .
~ The Jew often is proud of their heritage (and rightfully so). Christ has now turned his attention to the gentile, that is you if you are not a Jew. He does this that God may bring his chosen back to him. He does this also that we might obtain salvation. God never wants to loose his sheep. If it is those of the house of Judah or those in the outer most parts. Christ died for you!

12 Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their fulness?
~ If God chooses to bless the gentile or the Jew what does it really matter. When you ignore the blessing of God, he often removes the blessing and gives it to someone else. This does not mean he loves you less. It simply means your blessing may be moved to someone else and they will receive what you are suppose to have. Jesus came to the house of Israel. Thy rejected him. Paul is now focusing on the Gentiles because they would listen. They would believe.

13 For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office:
~ Paul speaks now to the Gentiles because he now calls himself an apostle to the Gentiles (that is you and me if you are not a Jew by birth.

14 If by any means I may provoke to emulation them which are my flesh, and might save some of them.
~ You ever notice often times one person from one social group will not reach out and talk with or work with another? Paul is telling us here he hopes that others will follow his lead, that people might be saved. I can tell you personally I don’t care where you come from, what color your skin is, how much you make, how much you don’t make, how you were raised, how you talk, how you dress, how you act, I would love to share the gospel with any. That is one of our purposes here on earth. Fruit begets fruit.

15 For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead?
~ Amen Paul reminds the reader that if the cast away those who are lost, come to Christ it is like one coming back from the dead. You say well if I can bring back someone from the dead, people WILL listen! I say Christ already did that, get out there and tell them about it!

16 For if the firstfruit be holy, the lump is also holy: and if the root be holy, so are the branches.
~ I think sometimes I should start growing trees rather than the work I do. If the lump is holy; if you are saved by Grace by the trusting in the Lord Jesus Christ for your salvation, then all that you reach will be holy as well. That fruit that you grow will be good fruit. They too will teach of Christ and him crucified for salvation.

    17 And if some of the branches be broken off , and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree;
~ If you then have someone who is of a wild tree, gaining salvation of another means………..face it if you pull someone into your ministry that is NOT saved, how does that help your ministry? This may be a friend, a wife, a girlfriend. It can be a whole lot of things, but in the end it really boils down to this. If you want someone grafted into your ministry make sure they are of the same belief as you. Other wise they will steal of your fruit and maybe kill the tree all together.

18 Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast , thou bearest not the root, but the root thee. 19 Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off , that I might be graffed in .
~ Dont boast in the work that you do, not in the fruit you produce, not in the fruit others produce. You may have 150 saved in a year, you may have 3000 souls saved in a year, but I say this: God saved all of them; not you! Brag in what God has done and quite worrying about how many souls were saved or how many people were on church on Sunday morning. Here is a better question: Have you allowed God to use you. It is Christ that saves and produces the good fruit. If you are relying on your fruit it will be good for nothing. Its not our works that is able to save, but Christ’s.

20 Well; because of unbelief they were broken off , and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded , but fear : 21 For if God spared not the natural branches , take heed lest he also spare not thee.
~ We need to be mindful of our thoughts, our words and our actions. There is nothing for us to boast in, there is no work that we have here that will come with us after this time on earth is finished. The only work that matters is the work of Christ and if you allow him to use you for it, praise God not man.

22 Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell , severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off .
~ If you who are saved start to stray away from God and go your own way. I have seen it many times in the ministry where someone gets all fired up for a month or two and they burn out. They go their own way. God cautions us of this, remember we too can be cut down; physically or by our fruit. We are still sinners saved by grace no matter what shoes in life you wear.

23 And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be graffed in : for God is able to graff them in again.
~ We are able to be brought back into God’s fold. We can turn back to Christ and realize that God will use you again. If you falter along life’s pathway remember you can get back on the path. You may have a tough row to hoe because of your turning away but God is faithful and just to forgive you of ALL your sins. Its a heart matter.

24 For if thou wert cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and wert graffed contrary to nature into a good olive tree: how much more shall these, which be the natural branches, be graffed into their own olive tree?
~ God’s chosen was the Jews, he then turned his attention to the gentile; when we work together for God’s purpose what kind of fruit will we produce. I love speaking to my Jewish friends, I love it when I can share Christ with them. I love it when these intelligent beings actually take the time to sit and think about what I am saying. I know a completed Jew in conjunction with a gentile, there is nobody that you cant reach.

25 For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in .
~ Blindness to Israel, speaking of the dismissing of Christ until the Church age is completed. When the church is gone who is it that God will be reaching out to again? His chosen, read your Bible I beg you understand what it is that God’s word says. God has a plan and he wants you to be a part of it.

26 And so all Israel shall be saved : as it is written , There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer , and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:
~ There will be a deliverer, one who delivers Israel from there denial of Christ, this will be done by one who has Christ as his savior. One who understands the things of God. The work will be of God, of Christ to the house of Israel.

27 For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.
~ This is God’s promise to the house of Israel, he will take away the sins. No because they are born of Jewish decent but because they believed on God for salvation. Salvation of God is through out the Bible and will be till the end of time. Salvation is not in a church, a family, a birthright. It is in the faith

28 As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes : but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers’ sakes.
~ The elect is those loved by God, the belief in the Gospel is what makes you elect if you are a gentile.

29 For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.
~ All gifts of God are good. There is nothing to repent over. We are all gifted in our own ways. If God gives you a gift, use it for his glory.

30 For as ye in times past have not believed God, yet have now obtained mercy through their unbelief:
~ The gift they have given the unbeliever is faith. It is through Christ that we are saved.

31 Even so have these also now not believed , that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy .
~ Now though the mercy that was given you, you too can obtain mercy. Through Christ Jesus.

32 For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all.
~ God gives mercy to all who believe, to the Jew and the Gentile.

33 O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!
~ Who can know God fully? Nobody! God is unsearchable, he is never ending, unreachable on our own. We can only obtain God’s mercy and Grace though our faith in Christ, that faith came to us by another who believed enough to share it with you,

34 For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor?
~ God is way beyond us, he has no counselor, he has no one that he answers to, he is God and God alone.

35 Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again ?
~ None has first given to God, God gave of himself when he allowed his son to die on a tree. It was not at that moment in time they decided whelp looks like we might want to get down there and take care of this whole salvation thing, God had a plan prior to the framing of the world.

36 For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.
~ All glory for all things, by all people go to God almighty, the author and finisher of our faith!
