Romans Chapter 10

1 Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.

2 For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.

3 For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.

4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.

5 For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them.

6 But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:)

7 Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)

8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;

9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.

13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?

17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

18 But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world.

19 But I say, Did not Israel know? First Moses saith, I will provoke you to jealousy by them that are no people, and by a foolish nation I will anger you.

20 But Esaias is very bold, and saith, I was found of them that sought me not; I was made manifest unto them that asked not after me.

21 But to Israel he saith, All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people.

  1. Commentary

1 Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.
~Paul tells his brethren or his brothers in Christ that he desires and he prays that Israel might be saved. Not the country itself but the people in it. This is a prayer and a desire that should be on all men’s hears but not just for Israel, but for every man. I teach often that when we become Christians we have a change in our lives (at least we should notice a change). For some people this is instant, some do a complete 180 from the direction they were heading in and move towards the things of God. Others is much more gradual. I also want to point out because you have made that change don’t expect for there to be times of trials and troubles. Times where you will fall back into some of those old traps this ol’ world has to offer. God saved us and sealed us till the day of redemption. He did not change this ol’ flesh that still wars after the things of God that are counter to the things of this body. There is however a change taking place. If you have personally ask Christ to save you from your sins he says you are a new creature and that old things are new. You are new. You are changing. Howbeit slow of fast you are changing. You have a new nature in you. A good validation in this is how you feel about people. Do you want them to have what you now have? Do you want them to experience the peace and grace that God gives? Do you want them too to be saved?

2 For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.
~ Paul goes on to say they have a real zeal for God or a real desire for God, high energy for the things of God, but one of the biggest words in the Bible but; not according to knowledge. In other words they say they have a hunger for God but they really don’t even know God. Think about it; what group of people was it that turned Jesus over to be crucified? It was the religious leaders of that time. The ones that claimed to proclaim God’s word is the one that put the Word to death, but they were only the ones that were physically there and doing those actions. We are the ones responsible for his death on the cross every-time we choose to ignore what God’s Word says and choose our own path. When we choose to sin we choose that cross for Christ!

3 For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.
~ For them not knowing what it means to be righteousness with God, they chose to make their own righteousness. When we don’t follow what God’s plan is we simply make our own plan. I am not sure how it works out for you when this happens but for me it does not work out very well. This is simply stated in Paul’s writing as we have not submitted ourselves to the righteousness of God.

4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.
~ Christ dying on the cross was the end of the law. He did not come to destroy the law, but rather fulfill the law and the punishment of our sins on the cross. It took a perfect sacrifice on the cross to give us a way to salvation eternal. God so loved the world (that is you and I) that he gave his only begotten son (that is Jesus) that whosoever believeth in him (do you believe in Christ and what was done on the cross?) shall not parish (you will live forEVER) but have everlasting life.

5 For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them.
~ Moses taught that your righteousness is shown by your living by the law. But Christ informed us that non of us were able to live by the law. To live by the law you have to live by all of the commandments not just the ones that you agree with but all of them. If you break one you have broken them all. You are guilty of sin. You would not have eternal life though the law. You obtain eternal life though Christ and what he did on the cross.

6 But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:)
~ There is none righteous no not one. Christ was the only one that came down from heave, lived on this earth as a man for some 33 years and died without sin. I sure have not done so, and brother if you are reading this neither have you! We are sinful people because we have been born into sin. It comes naturally due to this corruption of this ol’ flesh. You are not perfect, guess what none of us are! But there was one who was and that is Christ. That is why he had to take the cross, he had to endure the shame, he had to make the decision to die that we might live. We were not able to do so for ourselves.

7 Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)
~ Who can descend into the deep….Christ died on the cross and was dead for 3 days. Then that sweet morning He Arose! He Arose! Alleluia Christ Arose! We are unable to raise ourselves from the dead, only God has the power to do so. He did so in Christ for us to understand he has power of sin and death. There is no grave that can hold my Saviour down, there is no death that will prevent my Saviour from redeeming my soul.

    8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
~ The word of God is in your heart, it is in the heart of the believer in Israel, to India to Indiana. We as believer need to reach out to those around us that are lost and give them the word. You may not be called to be a preacher, a singer or a minister. But we as the church of the living God have the ability to tell those we come in contact about God. About Christ dying on the cross for our sins. About the eternal life that awaits us if we only believe. Brother even if you are not a preacher, reach your world for Christ.

9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
~ This is what it is all about, salvation in a nut shell. If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus. If you believe that he was he did and he does live and died on the cross and now lives forever in your life you too SHALL be SAVED!!! That is saved from the penalty of sin and that is death. You will be saved from this world and all it has to offer, if you only believe.

10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
~ This verse gives you the why: With the hear man believes into righteousness this is the righteousness of God not our righteousness. Our righteousness is as dirty rags in the eyes of God. We dont really choose to do right but its HIS righteousness that is what saves us through our confession of our sins and the belief in our hearts. Forget all other things you have been told. Today believe in the words you read. You can be saved. Not this is not a hope so, maybe so, think so salvation its a KNOW so salvation. God does not mince words. He says that shalt be saved!

11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
~ The scripture or the Word of God says if you believe on him (Christ) you shall not be ashamed. You will have the answer that many will never know. You will have salvation through Christ and Christ alone. Not by what we do but what HE does.

12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.
~ Paul makes it very clear here. There is nothing preventing anyone from coming to Christ. There is but one God he created EVERYONE and EVERYTHING that you see. He did. That same God that created it all is the same God that chooses to save you. Not just the Jew, not just the Gentile (all others but Jews) but anyone who calls upon the name of the Lord, shall be saved!

13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
~ This verse in my opinion does not need clarity. If you call on God (in the way described above) you will be saved.

14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
~ Here is where the rubber meets the road. If you go back and read the beginning of this chapter. I don’t care who you are. Those people you don’t want to see lost needs to hear the gospel of Jesus. The gospel is simply stated the good news. That good news is that Jesus died for their sins just like he did yours. If you don’t tell them they may never hear. Tell someone about Jesus today.

15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!
~ How can you preach unless you be sent? Look God wants you to reach someone today. Reach out and tell someone around you, take a trip, became a preacher, teacher do what you must but tell others about Jesus today! Tomorrow may be to late.

16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?
~ What if someone hears and does not accept Christ? Really that is what is being said here. What if they hear and don’t respond? Let me tell you its not your duty to make someone believe. It is only your duty to share the Gospel. It is God’s duty to grow the seed. You may look at someone and say, I dont think they are ready, or they are not the type of people we want in church. I often look at the bus kids at our church and realize they are an expense, they cost us time and often times heart ache. But let me tell you THEY are why Christ came to this earth. He did not call the innocent unto repentance but those who are lost and those who NEED Christ.

17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
~ This is how people will respond. They hear the Word of God, and faith comes to them. It is not our duty to make them believe only to share the gospel.

18 But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world.
~ All creatures large and small are able to see God in all that is created. I am not saying God is in everything and everything is in God. I am saying when we look at all that is created we see there is intelligent design. There is a creator. It is in everything that is created. There are many resources around the subject of intelligent design. But let me tell you God’s word will be given out. To all creatures big and small. Salvation is for mankind but we all bask in the glory of God’s creation. God’s word will go out to every nation, every tribe, in every tongue.

19 But I say, Did not Israel know? First Moses saith, I will provoke you to jealousy by them that are no people, and by a foolish nation I will anger you.
~ Israel has had many opportunity to turn to God. God has been trying to reach his chosen ones for years and years. They have had the Word of God with them and often they do not choose him. Christ is the messiah, the one that all must believe in, in order to make it to heaven. There is no other way. Christ said I am the way the truth and the life.

20 But Esaias is very bold, and saith, I was found of them that sought me not; I was made manifest unto them that asked not after me.
~ Esiaias says that I was found of them that sought me not, in other words when man did not seek God, God seeked man. He showed himself many times over even when the children of God chose different paths. God wishes for us to choose him today. In America today we are not much different. We have many opportunities to choose God yet often times professing Christians turn from him. We must accept him to accept heaven and the future to come. There is no other nation with so many Bibles in the households yet there are many households that will outright reject his word. Beloved we need to reach the lost at any cost. The day of redemption drawith neigh and many are still not saved.

21 But to Israel he saith, All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people.
~ God tells Israel even though you reject me I still seek you. He is doing the same for America today. America was a great nation that was blessed by God. Today I am not sure we can continue to say that. There is only one thing that will change that today. That is Christ, reach someone today.
