Romans 6

Romans

1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound ? 2 God forbid . How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein ? 3 Know ye not , that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: 6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed , that henceforth we should not serve sin. 7 For he that is dead is freed from sin. 8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: 9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. 10 For in that he died , he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth , he liveth unto God. 11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. 12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. 13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. 15 What then? shall we sin , because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid . 16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey ; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? 17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you . 18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. 19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. 20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. 21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed ? for the end of those things is death. 22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. 23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

  1. Commentary

1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound ?
~If you are saved from the penalty of sin, should we simply continue in sin? This is another way we may ask this question!

2 God forbid . How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein ?
~If we have been freed from sin, then how can we still live in sin? If you have truly repented from sin and have been given life from the death sentence that you were issued prior to the day you ask Jesus to forgive you of your sins. When we are given life we are given a new spirit, a new freedom, freedom from the sinful past we have given up. We ask Jesus to save us from. If you are saved you should have the desire to turn from that old life and turn to a new life. The life that is in Christ!

3 Know ye not , that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
~ When we are baptized in Christ, when we have given up on our sins and ask Christ to come in we give up our death issued to us from this world and our sin and have been born into a new family. One that is free from sin!

4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
~When we are baptized in Christ we are identified with his death. When we are raised from the waters of baptism we are identified with his resurrection. We should then be identified with Christ in all we do. We should live our lives for Christ not ourselves. Because we have chosen to accept His salvation we then should choose to live our lives for Him. We should as the scripture says walk in the newness of life that we are awarded through Christ Jesus.

5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
~ If we are identified in his death, guess what Christian you will also be identified in his Resurrection, his power over death and the grave. There is nothing of this world that can overcome God. We can know that we have a new life in Christ.

6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed , that henceforth we should not serve sin.
~Our old man in this verse is our old nature; our sinful nature that we have let go when we accepted Christ as our savior we simply give up all rights to the sinful nature we once had. We should be able to release the desire to serve our old sinful nature.

7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.
~He that has identified with Christ’s death is free from our sin, and the penalty that goes along with it!

8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:
~ Here comes the faith growing spot, if we are dead or identify with Christ at his death on the cross, we accept that as payment for our sins then we shall also be alive through that same saving grace.

9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
~ When we look to the fact that Christ physically died on the cross and was buried and rose again 3 days later (up from the grave he arose!) we know that death could not hold him down. Death had not dominion or power over him. It is in Christ alone that we too can rise again after our conversion, after we have given ourselves over to Christ when we accept Him as our personal savior. When we come to a place where we know that SIN HAS NO POWER OVER US because CHRIST CONQUERED SIN, DEATH and the GRAVE, there is nothing we can do to earn it on our own, then we just like CHRIST have dominion over death. We have power over death, and the grave, we can walk in the newness of life because his gift at the cross but more important what he did 3 days later when he rose from the grave!

10 For in that he died , he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth , he liveth unto God.
~ He died one to become the payment for all men’s sins. This is for all men in ever age. This is a onetime sacrifice from a man who had everything to loose but chose the cross, chose the shame, chose the death, and he did this for you and for me.

11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
~ We need to recognize that we are dead in our sins, and our trespasses. There is nothing we can do other than accepting his gift on the cross for us into our lives. He died on the cross not for his sins, not because he was guilty but because we are. He did that we might have a way to pay sins awful price. He died so that we would have a way to be reconciled to God.

12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
~ This is Paul speaking to the believer now; let not sin rule you! Don’t be OK with sin, don’t accept it in your life, don’t fall prey to it any longer. Get it out of your life for good! This is not saying you will ever become perfect because you wont. This is saying you should attempt to live a life that is pleasing to God one that is sinless or free from sin. Sin will only drag us down. If you are a Christian reading this today you have been set free from SIN you are no longer a slave to sin! IF you are a Child of God then realize you have power over sin and the battle is not yours but its already been won!

13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
~ Let me tell you Christian, your members are you parts of your body. Christ says don’t fall into retaining sin in your lives. If you have accepted Christ then accept his payment realize the battle has already been one and don’t continue to fall into the same ol’ traps that you once fell into.

14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
~ When you became a Christian you have won the battle through Christ sin is no longer your master, you are not under the law but you are under the grace of God! Grace is simply this: receiving something that you don’t deserve from someone you will never be able to pay. Sin took a perfect sacrifice. Because of our sinful nature we could not be able to live a life that is pleasing to God. When looks upon the unsaved he see’s their sin. Our sin when we become a Christian we are covered in his blood that he spilled for you and I. We are now under that unmerited grace of God.

15 What then? shall we sin , because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid .
~Because we are under God’s grace does not mean we are able to have a free ticket, or a get out of jail free card. It instead means that because we are under Grace we should realize we don’t want to sin any longer. If you are able to live in sin without fear of retribution then you really should take some time out to determine if your salvation is really of God or one that you have made up. Salvation is real, its not a feeling, a flutter, a tear shed or movement. Salvation is simply of God and our acceptance of his work on the Cross for our sins.

16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey ; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
~ Do you know who you serve? If you have served sin then you are now a SERVANT of sin. IF you obey GOD then you then become a SERVANT of God. If you obey the sinful pleasures of this world, or this flesh that we are rapped in, you guessed it you are now servant of that sin or your flesh. IF you have accepted Christ as your savior SERVE HIM!

17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you .
~ Paul says he is thankful that those this book was reading to already turned themselves over to God and that they no longer are servant to your sin.

18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
~ When you are set free you are the servant of righteousness. In easy terms this is being right with GOD.

19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.
~ Paul gives a comparison of your old and new nature. If you were a non believer you turned yourself over to sin. If you think you did or not you DID. Your sin is there if you believe it or not. Its literally in our nature to sin. If you are a Christian; you should not live like the devil.

20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.
~ When you are servant of sin, righteousness is not in you. Its not in your nature to become righteous.

21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed ? for the end of those things is death.
~ Paul must have loved fruit, cause he is always talking of it. What fruit you have is based on the condition of your heart. If you have a pure heart for the service you provide then your fruit will be good. If your fruit is not good then you can easily determine the condition of one’s heart.

22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
~ This is where the rubber meets the road, the wages or your earnings of sin is death. but through Gods payment on the cross we have the ability to have so much money.
