1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, 2 (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,) 3 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; 4 And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead: 5 By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name: 6 Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ: 7 To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. 8 First , I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world. 9 For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers; 10 Making request , if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God to come unto you. 11 For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established ; 12 That is , that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me. 13 Now I would not have you ignorant , brethren, that oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto ,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles. 14 I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise. 15 So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also. 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth ; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. 17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written , The just shall live by faith. 18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; 19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. 20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen , being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: 21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful ; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened . 22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools , 23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. 24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: 25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator , who is blessed for ever. Amen. 26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: 27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another ; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet . 28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient ; 29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, 30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: 32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

  1. In today’s passage we read the letter written by Paul to the believers in Rome. We are about to embark a book that is very rich in theocracy and is dripping of the blood that saves us on every page it seems. There will be many who read this and don’t agree with the text in today’s society. We feel we have evolved beyond the need for such truths and really what we are saying by saying such things is that we are no longer in need of God himself. We will take this just as we have all others and break them down to what the chapter really means. I will spend a little more time on this book than some of the others simply because the implications for this book are so great. Lets digest this one verse by verse shall we:
    1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, 2 (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,) 3 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh;
    -Paul identifies himself as the writer of the book and speaks of being called of God to preach the Word.

    4 And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:
    -We are to declare the Son of God (Jesus), with power given to us by the holy scriptures. He has been given power and proof of that power by the fact that he was able to be raised from the dead.

    5 By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name:
    -It is through that same Christ that raised from the dead that we receive grace (unmerited forgiveness) and has called Paul to be his apostle.

    6 Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ:
    -Just as he called Paul he has also called you, not to be an apostle by to earn that same unmerited grace and let you know there is a work for you too.

    7 To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.
    -Encouragement for the the saints of God. He offers grace and peace to those believers in Rome.

    8 First , I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world.
    – He thanks God for the believers, do you thank God for other believers?

    9 For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers;
    -He wants to readers in Rome to know how much he loves them and is in often prayer for them.

    10 Making request , if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God to come unto you.
    -Paul wishes to come to Rome to preach the Gospel and meet with the believers.

    11 For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end -ye may be established ;
    – He wishes to give the believers a spiritual gift.

    12 That is , that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me.
    – That they may grow together and increase in faith between both those in Rome and Paul himself.

    13 Now I would not have you ignorant , brethren, that oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto ,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles.
    -Here comes the teaching…..Paul would not have the others ignorant but he wanted to let them know that his strong desire was to reach them that there may be fruit for our Lord and Savior.

    14 I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise.
    – He owes many from the Greeks (critical thinkers) to the Barbarians (those who have strength), the wise, and the unwise. That statement pretty much sums it up really (wise and unwise you have to be one or the other).

    15 So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also.
    -He desires to preach to those in Rome.

    16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth ; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
    -Paul is not ashamed of the Gospel (are you ashamed of what God’s Word has in it?), but Paul will preach it to the Jew and the Gentile (folks to sum that up he was preaching to everyone).

    17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written , The just shall live by faith.
    – Christ’s righteousness is revealed by our faith, I think of the song the Longer I serve Him the Sweeter it grows. This is a great song and really what he is saying here the more that you have faith the more that you will see God’s righteousness.

    18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
    -You know this is a great verse for today. Often all we hear about is God is Love, God is Love, and I agree with that statement, but God is not JUST LOVE! God has wrath (anger). He has wrath towards the things that are unrighteous (the things that go against what God has declared in this book.

    19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
    -Our sins seem to find us out, do you ever notice that when you are doing something wrong we have that tugging feeling in us that says, “Why am I doing this” yet we often continue to perform what ever act of sin it is as we are yet disobedient to the tugging of the Holy Spirit of God.

    20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen , being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
    -God sees all, he hears all, he knows all. I often remind my kids that you may get over on me, but you will never get away with the things you do with God. He sees our sins in secret or those that are out in the public.

    21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful ; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened .
    -When we know who God is, we are to Glorify Him! We should be thankful that God gives us all that we have and all that we need. But instead we often times fall prey to our own imaginations. We do things that makes us feel good and what we desire rather than what God desires. God goes on to say through Paul that their foolish hearts were darkened because they chose to continue to follow themselves and their lustful desires more than to serve God!

    22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools ,
    -Those that were saying they were wise, had been proven to be fools in God’s eyes.

    23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
    – They changed the glory of the uncorruptible God image (we are the very image of God) we made it corruptible and if you look at the activities that the Romans did over time you will see that they had not holds on any kind of sin, personal sin, private sin, they would have sex with anything and anyone. Orgies, bestiality and homosexuality was on the menu and there was not anything wrong with it in their eyes.

    24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
    -Eventually God gave them over to those sexual lusts and he went on to say that they dishonoured their own bodies by fulfilling these lusts.

    25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator , who is blessed for ever. Amen.
    -They changed God’s truth into lies and worshiped the things that God created rather than the one who created those things.

    26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
    -God finally gave them over to those lusts and specifically calls out some in the next couple of verses. I find it very pertinent for today to speak about what God feels about homosexualty because he starts it out here, they changed the natural use of their bodies into what was against nature (it was wrong).

    27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another ; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet .
    – The men left their natural use for woman and burned with lust one to the other (men lusted towards other men, sound like anything all over the news today?).

    28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient ;
    – God gave them over to a reprobate mind when it came to this sin, in other-words they determined that it was ok to do this, there was nothing wrong with it, man was allowed to believe that this was ok! He was allowed to do those things that were against what God said was wrong. This was not condoned but chosen by man!

    29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
    -Being filled with (here comes the list of the sins) unrighteous (not being right with God), fornication (all types of sexual sins), wickedness (doing things against God), covetousness (wanting what others have), maliciousness (being malicious in nature, or up to no good).

    30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
    -The list continues backbiters (talking bad about others), being spiteful, puffed up with pride, boasting (telling others how good you are), inventors of evil (in never ceases to amaze me that we can come up with new forms of evil it would seem daily), disobedient to parents (wow show me a teenager today that is obedient. Mine try from time to time but even they are not perfect.

    31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
    – He is not done yet, we have no understanding, we break our promises, we have unnatural affections (much like what we spoke of above when it came to homosexuality), unappeasable or unforgiving, unmerciful (Showing no mercy).

    32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.
    – Knowing the judgment of God, they knew that the things spoken were worthy of death but didn’t care, they did it anyway. Bothers and sisters reading this I want you to think about it for a second. This is our country today, this is our world today, this is our christian churches today that will allow this type of behavior and call it a sin if you speak against it. Even more you will be demonized and told you don’t understand what God really means by what the simple words typed in this book says. Let me be as clear as I can possibly be sin in any sorts that is allowed in our lives is a sin against God, God has no sin, and further more he can not tolerate sin in his life or the life of the believer. If you are a Christian reading this and don’t agree with my words here I ask you to rethink what it is you are saying. I totally understand and expect those that are not of God to disagree with this stand but what REALLY concerns me to day is the amount of “believers” that have fallen into this line of thinking. Be careful Christian we are no better than those who were in the Roman days and following the lusts of our hearts. Turn to God before it is to late.
